Beginner Running Tips

If you are considering beginning an exercise regimen that includes running or jogging, here are some tips that will help you get started! All of these tips can be equally applied to running on a treadmill, and may help to make your run a little more fun!

1. Listen to music. This is extra important if you are running on a treadmill, or running alone! If you are just getting into running, and you don’t have music or a friend to distract you, you will dwell heavily on the pain you are feeling, or your inability to breathe.

2. Take it easy. You don’t want to overwork yourself, or else you won’t keep with it. Start off on the first day by running one mile (or less if you can’t quite make one mile!). The next day go up to 1.5 or 2 miles. And just keep working up from there. Three to four miles per day is an ideal target for the average workout once you have built up to that point. Take it slow and easy, and within the first month of running daily you should be up to your target distance.

3. Reward yourself after a run. No, do not go out and eat a box of doughnuts. That will destroy all that you have worked for. A suitable reward would be a fruit smoothie, or a fresh piece of fruit. Just make sure that you pick something that you like to be your reward because if you do it will motivate you to finish your run strong!

The bottom line when you are beginning to work out is to just keep it fun and don’t overwork yourself! That way you won’t end up regretting your decision to exercise, and over time you will learn to love the sport of running.
